About
Branches & Bosses: Black Girls Explore Government is an inspiring, self-paced 8-week course designed for 2nd and 3rd grade girls to discover the powerful legacies of Black women in government and learn about the three branches of the U.S. government. This standards-driven course is carefully aligned with educational benchmarks, ensuring that participants gain knowledge and skills that enrich and extend what they learn in school. Through engaging stories, interactive read-alouds, and hands-on activities, girls will explore the lives and leadership of trailblazers like Shirley Chisholm, Barbara Jordan, Michelle Obama, and Kamala Harris. Each week, participants will dive into new topics that celebrate their unique voices, talents, and beauty, while fostering pride in being part of a legacy of Black women who have shaped history and driven social change. The curriculum is designed to provide a rich and deeper understanding of government, history, and the experiences of Black women and girls in America. Sessions are fun and interactive, featuring direct instruction, small group discussions, and cooperative group activities. The flexible, self-paced format allows families to participate on their own schedule, with opportunities to connect online and share reflections. By the end of the course, girls will have a deeper understanding of government, a sense of community, and the confidence to use their voices for good.
